Next Stop: Africa!
Plans in pencil, always in pencil. Because the way we travel is fluid. There is no set route; there is only an idea, a general direction. We change plans based on whim, weather, recommendations from those in the know, personal needs, political situations, and most important of all- the call of family.
This season we are expecting our fourth grandchild- which means I need to get up to Michigan to be with our daughter and spend some time with our newest love. The baby is due in a month, but we all know he/she can come any day now. I feel the pressure to get there even as I write this.
So, while we had planned to drive south through Central and South Americas, we will now change course. We just left Guatemala and are back in Mexico heading north. The plan will be to store the van while I spend a month with family, travel to Costa Rica for our youngest daughter’s wedding, and then to Miami for Christmas/New Years. The husband will be doing some work related travel of his own so we will apart for a bit, with some much anticipated rendezvous planned.
After the holidays I will stay in Florida and prepare the van for shipment to Dakar, Senegal in Northwestern Africa. The husband I will link up in Dakar and we’ll spend time driving north from Senegal to Morocco. I hope to store the van in Morocco while I visit friends, family, and work Overland Expo West. After that, retrieve the van and head...south? North? As our plans have changed rather recently I have a lot of homework to do. When it comes to Africa, shipping to Africa, storing a vehicle, etc I am in the stage called “I don’t know what I don’t know.’ Which is to say, I have a lot to learn.
I am sad to miss out on South America, and real sad to leave Guatemala well before I was ready, but go we must. I know that as we continue to drive the globe, we will get to South America eventually. For now, a new direction, a new set of problems to solve, and many preparations to make. I hope you stay along for the journey- it should be epic!
